The Numbers Behind the Numbers ππ
Sales Are Great. But Do You Know WHY Theyβre Growing?
You open Shopify.
Sales are up. π
Awesome.
But here's the question:
Why?
Did more people visit your website? Did more visitors actually buy? Did customers spend more per order? Are previous customers coming back?
Revenue tells you what happened.
The numbers behind it can tell you why.
Let's break it down. π
Average Order Value π°
Your average order value, or AOV, tells you roughly how much customers spend each time they place an order.
If you did $20,000 in sales this month versus $15,000 last month, that's great.
But what changed?
Maybe you didn't get dramatically more customers. Maybe your average customer simply spent more.
Knowing your AOV helps you understand what an average order actually looks like for your business.
New vs. Returning Customers π
Getting a new customer is exciting.
Getting them to come back is even better.
Pay attention to how much of your business comes from new customers versus people who have already purchased from you.
If you're constantly finding new customers but almost nobody comes back, that's something worth noticing.
You don't want every sale to feel like starting from zero.
Conversion Rate π
Traffic sounds great until you realize traffic doesn't pay the bills.
Customers do. π
Your conversion rate helps you understand how many website visitors actually become buyers.
If your traffic suddenly increases but sales stay flat, that tells you something.
Maybe the issue isn't getting more people to the website.
Maybe it's what happens after they arrive.
Customer Acquisition Cost π΅
How much are you spending to bring in a new customer?
This is where looking only at revenue can become misleading.
You could have your biggest sales month ever while also spending significantly more money to generate those sales.
That doesn't automatically make it bad.
It just means you need to understand the cost behind the growth.
Repeat Purchase Rate β€οΈ
This is one we think deserves more attention.
Are customers buying once and disappearing?
Or are they coming back again and again?
A strong repeat customer base can become incredibly valuable because you've already done the hard work of earning their trust once.
Keep an eye on whether customers are actually sticking around.
Don't Obsess Over One Number π€―
Here's the biggest takeaway:
No single metric tells the entire story.
A great ROAS doesn't automatically mean everything in the business is perfect.
A lower conversion rate doesn't automatically mean something is broken.
And a huge revenue month doesn't automatically mean you've suddenly figured everything out.
Look at your numbers together.
That's when they start telling you a story.
TLDR: Ask WHY the Number Changed β‘οΈ
Don't just celebrate when sales go up or panic when they go down.
Dig one layer deeper.
Look at your average order value, conversion rate, customer acquisition cost, and whether customers are coming back.
You don't need to become a data analyst.
You just need to understand enough about your numbers to make smarter decisions for your business. π
